Local historian David Rose is giving his popular Lost Shops of Guildford illustrated talk at the Keep pub, Castle Street, Guildford this evening (Monday, June 12), at 7.30pm.
See lots of pictures of shops that were once in the High Street – butchers, chemists, clothes stores and more.
Hear how retail in the town centre was once in the hands of local traders such as W. E. White, Gates, Masseys, followed by the coming of the national multiples, including Boots, Timothy Whites, Woolworths and Marks & Spencer.
The changing face of retail will be discussed comparing it to the stores in the town today.
The audience will be invited to gives their comments and memories throughout the talk.
Entry is free, and the evening is being hosted by Ben Darnton of Guildford Collectors Records and his popular Facebook page Guildford Past and Present, and the Keep pub.
