After a two-year break the annual Guildford raft race returns on Saturday, July 2.
Guildford Lions Club, Zero Carbon Guildford, and Surrey Care Trust are teaming up for this year’s river race – with a twist.
The theme for the race is ‘jubilee’, but this year teams are being asked to avoid buying anything new, and use entirely recycled materials to cut down on the race’s environmental impact. If you’ve got an existing raft then you’re recycling the whole thing.
As well as the traditional prizes, ZERO will be offering a prize for the most sustainable raft. Therefore, think about how your vessel can be constructed with as little environmental impact as possible.
Festivities start at Millmead Island from 11am. There’ll be barbecues, duck races, and other fun and games throughout the day. The main race will begin at 3pm, with the first to reach Wey Kayak Club being crowned champions.
All proceeds go to local charities, and if you’re a charity yourself you can use your race sponsorship to support your own activities. Enter a team, volunteer on the day, or simply turn up and watch the fun. Check out ZERO’s website for more details, and sign up to enter via the Eventbrite page.
