Guildford Spectrum will be awash with Olympic fever this summer as 10 Olympic and Paralympic teams from all over the world will be going to the complex as part of their pre-games training.
Customers can expect to catch glimpses of world class athletes during July and August, and it is hoped that the opportunity to watch the athletes in action at selected times can be arranged.
The first to arrive at the award winning complex was the Oman National Paralympic athletics squad on Saturday, June 30, closely followed by Malta National Olympic athletics team on Sunday, July 1.
A spokesman from Spectrum said that teams have signed up to use the athletics stadium which, along with the rest of the complex, is managed on behalf of Guildford Borough Council by Freedom Leisure citing quality of facilities and proximity to London as their reasons for choosing the venue.
They will also be supplementing their on-track training with sessions in the 100-station gym. The athletes will be doing the majority of their gym training during public opening times so customers might just find themselves in the stretch area with an Olympian!
Rob Price, the marketing manager for Spectrum added: “We’re really excited that so many countries have signed up to use Spectrum as part of their pre-games training. It’s a testament to the first-class experience we strive to create at the complex. We hope the athletes will inspire the community to come into Spectrum and get active, whether it’s through athletics, working out in the gym, swimming or joining an exercise class.”
Olympic and Paralympic teams that have signed up to use Spectrum include Nigeria, Cayman Islands, Philippines and Dominica.

How much better Guildford looks with the pleasant coloured Olympic banners in place of the ugly and depressing litter campaign banners we usually have, particularly the fag-end just before the pedestrian bridge to the Friary. Could we please have similar banners in place all the time or alternatively nothing.
