This is the last in a series of interviews with the party leaders at Guildford Borough Council.
The series culminates with Julia McShane, the leader of the largest political group at the council, the Liberal Democrats. She is also, of course, the leader of the council.
Her ascent to the leadership role was not expected and Julia explains how it came about. Other party leaders at Millmead have acknowledged that her confidence and performance have improved with time, especially it seems since the arrival of the new CEO Pedro Wrobel in April this year.
In a 25-minute interview, the Lib Dem leader reflects on the 2023 election result, talks about the performance of other party leaders and her preference for a collaborative approach. Martin Giles also quizzes Julia about council finances as well as her party’s stated aim of a “greener Guildford” and how it fits with giving up more green belt designated land.
Finally, the council leader, who is also lead councillor for housing, answers the question about whether she intends to stand once again next May as a county councillor representing Guildford North.
