A ‘Royal Honeymoon’ Street Party allowed local residents to celebrate the royal nuptials as a community last Sunday (May 20, 2018).
Organised by Onslow Village Residents’ Association, the recently installed Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Mike Parsons and the Mayoress, Mrs Jean Parsons, were the guests of honour.
They were joined by over two hundred locals, who gathered together in ‘The Square’ in Onslow Village, to enjoy a variety of displays and events.
With festive decorations overhead and lines of tables in the road, many enjoyed picnics and ice creams, cakes from the Women’s Institute stand and fare from the Wilderness Café in the brilliant ‘Royal Wedding’ weather.
Others explored the Village Hall, where All Saints’ Church held activities and where Village Heritage boards were displayed.
The Women’s Institute’s extensive display of their members’ wedding dresses filled one end of the hall and the stage. This inspired exhibit, which illustrated the variety of styles through the decades, proved to be a popular attraction.
Outside, children played with street games and a ‘Lady and the Tramp’ dog show was followed by a children’s ‘Bride and Groom’ fancy dress.
Member of Parliament for Guildford, Anne Milton, provided a signed House of Commons bottle of wine as the star prize in the raffle.
A spokesperson for Onslow Village Residents’ Association thanked all those who had helped to make the event a success, including Anne Milton MP, local councillors, the Onslow Village W.I., All Saints’ Church, Queen Eleanor’s School, the Onslow Village Hall Management Committee and many others.
