Working-age residents on Guildford Borough Council’s tax support list will automatically receive a further discount of £150 for 2020-21 to help the economic challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.
The borough council is also offering additional short-term discretionary payments to those struggling with financial issues.
Cllr Joss Bigmore (R4GV, Christchurch), lead for Finance and Assets, Customer Services, said: “We understand many of you are worried about how this challenging and unprecedented time will affect you financially and one concern is your council tax.
“We hope that this range of measures will help to allay the fears of the most disadvantaged residents. We need to pull together as a community, now more than ever and we will do all we can to support you through these tough times.
“In addition, we have help and support in place for council housing tenants and we can also advise on support for those in private rented accommodation. We also continue to work closely with partners to support people who are homeless or rough sleeping in our borough.”
Council tax support is available to people who have lost their job or been placed on reduced hours during the pandemic. Applications can be made through the council website at https://www.guildford.gov.uk/localcounciltaxsupport.
Any resident having difficulties making their council tax payments should call 0330 123 0081 or email ctax@guildford.gov.uk (putting DIFFICULTIES in the subject line and quoting their council tax reference number) to discuss their problems.
Further financial assistance will be published as soon as possible. For full details, visit: https://www.guildford.gov.uk/article/23803/Financial-help-due-to-Coronavirus-measures

This funding is welcome. It was part of the government’s response to Covid-19, announced in the Budget on March 11 that it would provide local authorities in England with £500 million of new grant funding to support economically vulnerable people and households in their local area.
Guildford Borough Council has been allocated £469,380 in funding. Let’s hope this funding is used in full to help those most in need, and the council reports back on the take-up of support offered.
