People’s Vote Names Guildford Among 100 Key Seats To Unlock Election Decision

Guildford is among the key seats “that will decide the General Election”, a study by the People’s Vote campaign claims.

Campaign researchers, launching their tactical voting website, named 100 candidates they say could tip the balance of power into a second EU referendum.
In Guildford, Lib Dem Zoe Franklin is their recommended candidate.

A People’s Vote spokesman said: “These seats are the PV100, the seats that will decide the election. It’s especially important that our supporters vote tactically here to secure a final-say referendum. If they don’t, Boris Johnson will win this election and we will leave with his deal.”

Ms Franklin said: “I am pleased People’s Vote has recommended me as the candidate best placed to secure a final say on Brexit after the General Election. Every vote for me and the Lib Dems here in Guildford, Cranleigh and our Villages is a vote to stop Brexit and build a brighter future.

“The Lib Dems are the largest and strongest Remain party. If you want to stop Brexit, vote Lib Dem.”

But other candidates in Guildford are also supporting a second referendum.
Independent Anne Milton. who is proposing a “confirmatory referendum”, said: “People vote for a candidate for a variety of reasons.

“Stopping Boris Johnson from taking the country out of the EU without a deal will need someone with experience, not bound by the constraints of party politics.  A cross-party alliance will need to be built.

“I am in favour of a confirmatory vote, but I know that to achieve the votes in the House of Commons for this will need someone who can negotiate with all political parties, including Conservatives MPs.

“For many, this demonstrates that Guildford needs an Independent MP who is in favour of a confirmatory vote, but has the ability and experience to work with MPs from across the House on important, and complex, issues.

“Angry political fighting has failed to reach a resolution to the problems and today’s announcement does not suggest political parties alone can find a way through this.”

Brian Creese

Brian Creese, the Guildford Labour spokesman, said: “I think we might want to ask how an organisation campaigning for a People’s Vote can nominate the party, the Lib Dems, which is not going to hold a people’s vote over the party which is, Labour.

“Surely the People’s Vote campaign should be supporting Labour in Guildford? Their stance makes no sense.”

The Conservative and Peace Party candidates have also been invited to comment.

But, haven’t they forgotten that there wa s a people’s vote, a referendum, in 2016. This is a classic of those who only listen to what they want to hear – keep on asking for a vote. Typical of the EU over the years, and also of the SNP.
