A debt centre, run by a partnership of 17 Guildford churches, is calling on the Government to look again at the reality of poverty and destitution suffered by many of its clients.
The #LookAgain campaign is being led by UK-wide charity Christians Against Poverty (CAP), of which the debt centre and its job club in Guildford are part of.
CAP, together with thousands of its supporters, is writing to the Chancellor of the Exchequer to take decisive action to tackle UK poverty.
Jane Seals, Guildford CAP debt centre manager said: “It’s just not right that in a just and compassionate society, so many people in the local area are going to bed cold and hungry, unable to afford the most basic essentials.
“It’s about time we all did something to challenge that it should not be like this.
“Meeting clients in desperate need of help who have been squeezed by a system that is stacked against them is the most challenging part of my job as a debt centre manager.
“However, the best part of my job is being able to give them genuine hope that we can help them completely free of charge. For many of our clients this has been life changing. Our message is that the system can be redesigned and that small changes can have widespread positive effects.”
There is still time to sign the petition at http://capuk.org/takeaction, which will be handed in to 11 Downing Street.
CAP is determined to reduce UK poverty delivering free debt counselling, money management, job clubs and support for people breaking habitual dependencies.
CAP is committed to its services being available to all individuals regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.
