Two men were disturbed by a householder during a burglary in Guildford yesterday morning (Tuesday, June 26). They made off but were eventually located following a police pursuit and were subsequently charged.
The incident happened at around 6.15am when offenders forced their way into the garage of a detached house in the Onslow area, cutting wire mesh and using bolt croppers to break open locks.
The resident of the property was alerted by noises from the garage and on entering the garage tried to apprehend a man, who escaped and ran off towards a getaway vehicle in which there was a second man.
Officers from Surrey Police, alerted to the offence, followed the car and it was discovered abandoned in the Research Park area of the town. One man was located nearby in shrubbery and another was found hiding in a wheelie bin.
A 30-year-old man from Merrow and a 22-year-old from Normandy, Guildford have been charged with aggravated burglary. The man from Normandy will also face unrelated charges of possession with intent to supply Class A and B drugs.
One Onslow resident said this morning: “There have been quite a few crimes of this type in this area recently. I just hope that the the fact these two suspects were apprehended might act as a deterrent.”
The pair will appear at South East Surrey Magistrates Court in Redhill today (Wednesday, June 26).
