Queues were forming at petrol stations, which still had fuel, in Guildford on Thursday afternoon (March 29) in the wake of the Government’s advice to ‘top up’ fuel tanks.
Initial advice to also fill up Jerry cans has been withdrawn following complaints by the Fire Brigades’ Union.
A member of staff at Bellfields Esso Service Station in Woking Road, which had run out of all fuel, said: “It’s the same all over Guildford, we are desperately hoping for another delivery today.”
At the Shell service station in Aldershot Road, by 4.30pm, theere was no V-Power fuel. A cashier would not confirm how much fuel it had left. Queuing was also observed at petrol stations in Ladymead and one station in Woodbridge Road had a sign stating ‘Diesel Only’.
Messages regarding the situation were this afternoon, being sent by social media, such as Twitter. Some people have already decided to work at home as a result of the situation.
The latest Government advice is not to ‘top up’ fuel tanks until they are half empty.
