The leader of Guildford Borough Council has written to the prime minister offering help with the humanitarian refugee crisis. David Cameron announced yesterday that the UK will take 20,000 Syrian refugees over the five-year-life of this parliament.
A council statement reads: “Following the prime minister’s announcement that the UK will resettle 20,000 Syrian refugees by 2020, we are keen to do what we can to support our nation’s response to this humanitarian crisis.”
Council leader Stephen Mansbridge (Con, Ash South & Tongham), said: “No-one can be left untouched by the recent events unfolding before us. The crisis in Syria, to mention just one, is something we have to act on.
“We will work with national government, faith communities and aid agencies to respond to the humanitarian crisis. We are looking at practical ways to assist and have written to the Prime Minister offering our help.”
The statement continued: “We look forward to central government’s further announcement next week, which will give local authorities the necessary information to deliver an enhanced resettlement scheme for refugees.”

Very commendable sentiments.
However, we should not forget the old adage: “Charity begins at home.”

Despite ‘Osbourne’s economic miracle’, there are still food banks locally.
Trickle-down economics at its best.
