Rumours that a major supermarket chain will take over the empty store in Ladymead, recently occupied by the electrical suppliers Comet, recently taken into administration, have been denied by Marks & Spencer.
Two other companies, Morrisons and Lidl, also named in rumours as possible new tenants for the premises in Europa Park, have declined to comment.
It is understood that one major attraction of the retail unit to food suppliers is that a change of use planning application might not be required as the unit was originally a restaurant.
One supermarket headquarters employee who did not wish to be named said: “Premises, such as these, that allow fast opening with low start up costs can certainly be attractive but the size might be a little tricky. It is larger than our small outlets but obviously not nearly big enough for a full sized supermarket.”
Waitrose has recently been granted planning permission to build a supermarket in North Place, to the north of North Street, while Aldi continue to proceed with their plans to open a store on the Green Man site in Burpham, a mile away, despite opposition from some local residents.

A Lidl in Guildford would be excellent for people who want good food (including German spcialities) at lower prices. And amazing special offers, from biker gear to toys, bedding, DIY, gardening supplies, etc. When Leatherhead Lidl opened the car park was mostly full of old cars, but gradually the 4×4 brigade has discovered that Lidl produce isn’t just cheap, but also good. Please come, Lidl! Guildford needs you, for the good-value food and, when the new Waitrose opens, to keep traffic away from the town centre.

A man working at Ladymead said this week that the former Comet store there would become stores selling furniture and baths. No Lidl!
