The birth of Prince George has brought together more than 80 local schools with the creation of a very special quilt.
A Quilt For Kate, is a community project, co-ordinated by Eagle Radio, which has seen hundreds of school children work together on a patchwork present for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their new arrival Prince George.
Schools from across Surrey and Hampshire were asked to design a square and each one was added to the final product.
A message in the centre of the quilt reads: ‘To the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of your first baby, with love from The Children of Surrey and Hampshire and Eagle Radio’. The project was so popular some schools even used it as part of their curriculum.
Teachers commented on the positive effect it has had on the children, and how it helped them to learn about the royal family and its newest addition.
Journalist and project co-ordinator Yasmin Bodalbhai was thrilled with the response from all the schools and the end result. She said: “It’s not just about numbers; each and every patch has been carefully thought through and lovingly put together.
“Some of the children came in to see the finished quilt – and it was really special to see their eyes light up when we did the big reveal. I almost don’t want to let it go now! This really has been a labour of love.
Eagle Radio’s programme director, Peter Gordon said: “The quilt project has been another great example of how our listeners, especially younger ones, are ready to get involved in marking a piece of history.
“Thanks and well done to all the schools which took part – and many congratulations to Kate, William and the newest member of the royal family!”
