Series Of Free Lectures Focusing On Holy Trinity Church

Three fascinating lectures are taking place focusing on Guildford’s Holy Trinity Church in the High Street.

All are free to attend, and first takes place on Monday, February 12, at the Trinity Centre, Trinity Churchyard at 7.30pm and will be given by well known local historian and writer David Rose.

Called Holy Trinity Steps: A Silent Witness to Guildford’s Past, his illustrated talk will focus on historic events that have taken place on or near the steps of Holy Trinity Church.

These include royal proclamations, public gatherings, notable services at the church, as well as events in the street such as the infamous Guy Riots, carnival processions and parades, cycle racing and, of course, the people linked with them.

On Wednesday, May 30, at at the Trinity Centre, Trinity Churchyard 7.30pm, the Rev’d Adrian Leak will give a talk titled Who Moved the Pulpit? Changes in Church Lay-out, Furnishing and Ornaments through the Centuries.

From the earliest times to the present-day churches and the design of their interior have reflected the changing demands of liturgy and the theological beliefs underlying them.

Adrian will be illustrating his talk with pictures showing the changing designs and positions of the altar, font, chancel screen, choir stalls, pulpit and pews in the English parish church.

On Tuesday, July 10, at the Trinity Centre, Trinity Churchyard, Dr Mary Alexander’s talk is entitled Digging into the Past: Holy Trinity’s One Thousand Years of History.

This talk will unlock the secrets of Holy Trinity Church’s 1,000-year history, including the churchyard, the rectory, the houses along the eastern side of the churchyard and the developments on the High Street.

It is anticipated that esteemed historian Mary will be able to report on recent archaeological studies including the excavations into the mound in the churchyard and the use of ground-penetrating radar within the church to search for the lost crypt.

Colonel Patrick Crowley (retired) will give his talk on Tuesday, November 6, in Holy Trinity Church at 7.30pm. It is titled Your Local Regiment and its Links to Guildford and Surrey.

Established in 1661 on Putney Heath, the 2nd Foot, later The Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment, later joined with the East Surrey Regiment and now amalgamated within the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment has had strong links to Surrey and Guildford.

Holy Trinity Church has received significant Heritage Lottery Fund being used for substantial repairs and restoration work on this important Grade I listed building.

The latest work, starting in the next few weeks will be repairs to the steps leading down from the church to the High Street pavement.

As part of the grant, the church is committed to a variety of community engagement activities in 2018, including organising a heritage lecture series which is free to attend. Donations will be accepted to cover costs of refreshments.
