Services Of Remembrance Across Guildford Borough

Saturday, November 9, Charlotteville: Remembrance service will be at 3pm at the war memorial in front of Addison Court, Addison Road to commemorate Charlotteville men who died in both world wars.

After the service tea will be served in the Addison Court lounge where there will be poster displays with stories of the local community and the men who served in the wars.

The self-guided Charlotteville 1914-1918 Heritage Trail that was introduced last year will be displayed in Addison, Cline and Cooper Roads during the two weeks around remembrance weekend.

It tells of the 100-plus men who served in the military, as well as women and men who enlisted in the Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachments.

It also features some general history of old Charlotteville (with focus on the First World War), the eight shops, pub, St Luke’s church and institute, laundries – all now gone.

It comprises 30 posters with new ones that will acknowledge the contribution of local people 80 years ago when the Second World War began.

Sunday November 10, Guildford: The Mayor of Guildford arrives at the Guildhall at 8.45am to prepare to meet Bridget Biddell DL, High Sheriff of Surrey, and lead the civic procession to Holy Trinity Church for Guildford’s annual service of remembrance at 9.45am.

Following the service, veterans, serving personnel and members of local service organisations will march, to the music of the Friary Brass Band, to the Castle Grounds, where they will be joined by the mayor and civic procession to continue the service and lay wreaths at both memorials.

Sunday, November 10, Ash: The Deputy Mayor of Guildford, accompanied by her consort will attend Ash Parish Council’s remembrance service at the Ash Centre.

Councillors, uniformed and voluntary organisations will assemble at The Ash Centre car park by 10.15am to parade up Ash Hill Road to the war memorial at 10.35am.

The service of remembrance will be led by the local clergy and music will be provided by the North East Hampshire Area School Band.

The names of the fallen who are listed on the war memorial will be aloud by pupils from Ash Manor School.

Following the service everyone will parade back to the Ash Centre for dismissal by the parade marshall.

Everyone is invited to tea and coffee, provided by Churches Together in the Ash Centre following the parade dismissal. All proceeds from the teas and coffees are donated to the Royal British Legion.

Sunday, November 10, Westborough: Stoughton & Westborough Royal British Legion’s commemorations starts at 10am with wreath laying outside the club on Northway before heading to St Francis Church in Beckingham Road for a service of remembrance.

Monday, November 11, Guildford: The Mayor of Guildford, accompanied by the Mayoress, joins the leader of Guildford Borough Council, Caroline Reeves, managing director James Whiteman, local veterans and cadets at the Guildhall in the High Street to mark Armistice Day and observe the two-minute silence at 11am. Canon simulators will be fired to mark the beginning and the end of the two-minute silence.

Monday, November 11, Jacobs Well: Worplesdon Parish Council’s service of remembrance begins with wreath laying at 10.45am in Harry’s Meadow, just behind Jacobs Well Village Hall, followed by the two-minute silence at 11am.
