She was awarded the medal, for her services to charity, in the Queen’s New Year’s Honour’s List. The presentation took place on April 29 at a ceremony at County Hall in Kingston upon Thames, called the Surrey Investiture of British Empire Medals. The Lord Lieutenant of Surrey, Dame Sarah Goad, presented BEM medals to Shirley and eight other recipients.

Shirley said: “We had a lovely time. My husband Brian came along as did our two sons Gary and Spencer. I am now looking forward to a garden party at Buckingham Palace on May 22, that Brian and I will be attending.

May I congratulate you Shirley on your honours award, as I myself have been awarded British Empire Medal, in the Queen’s birthday honours 2013. It was truly dream come true for me. All volunteers do good by giving up they spare time to help others.
