Last month (May) the Stanley Gibbons Auction House set a new world record for a single Indian States postage stamp.

Following a tense bidding war, the Indian Feudatory States – Duttia, 1896 ½ anna black on blue green, with control handstamp in blue, achieved a sale price of £71,920 – shattering the previous highest price paid for a Duttia stamp of £36,464 in 2006.

Stanley Gibbons record breaking Indian Duttia Elephant stamp sold for nearly £72,000 in May 2021.

The record-breaking stamp was part of a collection that arrived at Stanley Gibbon’s team’s HQ largely unsorted and, after careful research and analysis, its experts discovered some hidden gems that had gone unrecognised by previous philatelists.

One of the experts described this as: “A most attractive example of this key stamp, ranking it amongst the finest of the five recorded by us. As no previous example of this stamp in this condition had ever come to market, we knew that if we could attract the right buyers to the auction, we could have something quite special on our hands.”

It is amazing what may be discovered in a collection when you have the right team evaluating its contents. The Stanley Gibbons valuations team is coming to Guildford offering free consultations and valuations on all manner of philatelic items from single pieces to lifetime collections.

If you would like to know whether your collection contains a rare and valuable item, visit them at the Holiday Inn Guildford on Tuesday, June 22, between 10am and 3pm. All consultations are free – do not be disappointed and book a time by emailing valuations@stanleygibbons.com or telephoning 020 7557 4411.

Visit the website for details of the valuation and auctioning process.
