Sunday afternoon is sports time for the younger members of the Guildford Nepalese community.
The Sunrise Gurkha Sports Club meets at the Guildford Community Centre in Haydon Place and has a growing membership of 50-plus. And it is keen to welcome anyone from across the borough.
Navaraj Ghale, a retired British Gurkha, founded the club. He is also its director.
Its objectives are to provide affordable sports to all those who attend; to develop each young person through instruction and example, so they can realise their full potential as a sportsman or sportswoman; and train them for open competitions at various levels.
The club also aims to encourage all of its own Nepalese community to take up sports activities – so to lead a healthy lifestyle and build in social values.
The club gives lessons in taekwondo, while there is also the opportunity to play badminton, table tennis, basketball, indoor football, darts and games such as chess and carom board.
There is also a yearly hiking trip and an annual “get together” function.
The club runs every Sunday from 3.30pm to 5.30pm.
February 17 sees a taekwondo upgrading test, with another following on May 19.
The hiking trip will take place on June 29, while on July 27 there will be a community youth activity talent exhibition.
August is the club’s special sports month.
Other adults who assist Navaraj at the club include its executive director Budhi Bdr Gurung, technical director Mani Chandra Rai, secretary Robin Gurung and treasurer Yogendra Thapa.
