The Guildford-based Sunrise Gurkha Sports Club’s annual 10-mile hike saw 77 people take part this year

Having a great day hiking in the hills around Guildford.

It was held on Saturday, July 7, and took in Pewley Down, Newlands Corner, St Martha’s Hill and the Chantries.

Walking through the woods.

A spokesman for the club said: “It was with some trepidation that we organised the event with the mercury high weather we have been experiencing.

“In light of this, our main focus was on the safety of our participants to ensure that no one became dehydrated. We made sure that plenty of water was available at each of the checkpoints. We also had a safety vehicle with a first-aid trainer following the group to act promptly should there be any incidents requiring medical aid.

“As expected, it turned out to be a clear sunny day and the heat could soon be felt as the temperature began to rise. The participants were all advised to wear suitable clothing.”

Lunch is served.

The walkers had a 20-minute break at the Newlands Corner checkpoint before making their way to St Martha’s Hill.

A sumptuous hot alfresco curry lunch was served near the St Martha’s Hill car park in Halfpenny Lane.

Plenty of food for all.

The spokesperson added: “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the delicious curry provided by the Great Gurkha Kitchen in Weybridge.

And then tug-o-war!

“Following lunch and some good rest, children had some fun activities which they really enjoyed, including tug-of-war. Adults too had a tug-of-war competition which they also very much enjoyed.”

“After the walk, the feedback was very positive from all participants and irrespective of whether funding can be obtained or not, they want the event to continue as it provides a good day out with friends and families, fantastic panoramic views with fresh air and obviously good health benefits.”

The Sunrise Gurkha Sports Club’s management team would like to thank all participants and to all who helped directly or indirectly and to the kind sponsors for making the event such a success.

All smiles on the walk.
