Long awaited repairs to The Mount began today (April 26) but have not progressed as quickly as expected.
A neighbouring resident reported that one of the road crew had said that the condition of this road was worse than any he’d seen in Surrey.
Some, who live on or use The Mount regularly, attribute this, at least partially, to the heavy construction lorries that use the road to take materials to new houses being built in Green Lane. They are concerned that the new surface will also be damaged by these vehicles.
Another nearby resident, Lorimer Burn, said that he had spoken to the project manager this afternoon. The resident said: “He was fairly despondent about progress today. He had hoped to have the job finished today, but they’ve only done the very top down to the turning circle.
“He was very reticent about explaining the reason, except saying that, ‘Once you get to the bottom of the ‘mix’ queue…’
“He has also had problems because the road is so narrow, making supply difficult. Additionally, there is nowhere for anyone to park. He’d said earlier this morning that they are using a quite expensive, flexible mix because of the nature of the road.”
Despite the slow progress today it is understood that the crew is still hopeful that it will be able to finish the job on Monday even though a large majority of the road remains to be repaired.
The Mount is one of the oldest roads in Guildford. It leads westwards from the High Street up on to the Hog’s Back, part of the North Downs chalk ridge that continues to Farnham and beyond. The steep gradient resulted in it being by-passed with the Farnham Road in the 19th century.

I wonder how long the remedial work will last with such heavy traffic using it these days!
