In this regular monthly column – a must read for all those interested in Guildford business – Claire Dee reports on manufacturing in the region.
A June report from the manufacturers’ organisation EEF and business advisers BDO has revealed that the future for the country’s manufacturers, including those in the South East, looks a little brighter in 2013.
The survey showed that prospects for the industry have improved over the past three months with predictions that this trend could continue, albeit slowly, into the second half of the year.
BDO commented that there seems a definite lightening of the mood among manufacturers supported by positive order balances. However, recovery in the sector still remains tentative.
Guildford has an active and buoyant business community best known for its professional services, retail and hospitality sectors. We mustn’t forget, however, that the town is also home to some of the world’s leading manufacturers – Colgate-Palmolive, Earlex, Philips Electronics and Surrey Satellite Technology to name just a few.
Most successful entities as a whole are only as good as the sum of the parts that make them complete. And Guildford is no exception.
So, for those of us immersed in the world of professional services – myself included – let’s not forget our manufacturing cousins whose contribution is just as significant and indeed, it would appear, on the increase.
