Three men were sentenced to a total of 21 years last week in Kinsgston Crown Court for crimes committed in Guildford.

Derren Moore, Kieran Telfer and Troy Whitwell were sentenced at Kingston Crown Court on Friday, (February 23, 2018), after they assaulted a man before breaking into his property on Edgeborough Road, off the Epsom Road, Guildford in April 2016.

The three men were sentenced to a total of nearly 22 years after pleading guilty to burglary, having an offensive weapon and dangerous driving.

The three men approached the victim while shining a torch in his face outside his flat, and sprayed him with a peppery substance in his face. They then went on to break into his flat using a hammer.

A Surrey Police spokesperson said in a press release: “A short while later we received reports of a multiple car collision on Epsom Road outside the Horse and Groom pub. Thankfully no one was injured.

“All three men ran from the scene of the crash. Telfer was found approximately 300 metres away from the scene in a nearby graveyard by one of our dog units, within minutes of police arriving at the scene.

“He was subsequently arrested for driving with no insurance and driving whilst otherwise in accordance with his license. Police found within the vehicle the stolen items from the burglary which had taken place minutes before.”

Whitwell was later arrested on Tuesday, 19 April in Woking, after a positive ID was made by a witness and with forensic evidence. Moore was later arrested on Wednesday, 27 April after forensic evidence was found, linking him to the incident.

Moore, 22, from Stuart Road, Reigate was charged with burglary and possession of an offensive weapon, and received 81 months imprisonment and a £140 victim surcharge.

Telfer, 22, from Blackborough Road, Reigate was charged with burglary, possession of an offensive weapon and dangerous driving, and received 100 months imprisonment, a £140 victim surcharge and has been disqualified from driving for two years.

Whitwell, 23, from Redhill was charged with burglary, and possession of an offensive weapon and received 81 months imprisonment and a £140 victim surcharge.

The officer in charge of the case, Detective Constable Becky Thomson said: “We believe the three men sprayed the victim in the face to scare him, as he wouldn’t have known what the liquid was, and it could have been something more serious such as acid.

“We are really pleased with this fantastic result.

“Thanks to our officer’s hard work, three men have been taken off the streets, meaning that the public can feel safer.”
