Overgrown alleyways and dusty signs have a new lease of life, thanks to a clean-up scheme this summer by Guildford Borough Council.

The Tidy Up campaign asked parish councils and ward councillors to nominate areas that needed a little more attention from cleaning crews.

A special two-man crew visited 22 parishes and wards to tackle extra tasks from hedge trimming to cleaning slippery moss. The areas nominated are not part of the usual street-cleaning service.

Cllr Matt Furniss, Lead Councillor for Environment, said: “It’s important to listen to our local community and recognise the areas that need a little more attention to improve the appearance of our borough.

“We have dedicated over 500 hours to the Tidy Up scheme this summer and hope that residents will notice the hard work of the teams and the positive impact of the clean-ups on the local area. ”

The clean-ups will continue until October.

The clerk of East Horsley Parish Council, Nick Clemens, added: “The work was done to a high standard. Bluebell Lane was an area I regularly had complaints about. This is now a more attractive and safe area for elderly residents who regularly use this footpath.”
