Under intense scrutiny from a very wet ‘scroodle’ (spaniel/poodle cross), I am demolishing a large slice of coffee and walnut cake in this most delightful of countryside cafes.
Situated in Gomshall, only a short drive from Guildford, Tillings appeals to all ages, from babes-in-arms to grannies. It’s also a super place to go on your own for a bit of ‘me’ time and to read a newspaper.
A selection of hot and cold food is served throughout the day, including lavish breakfasts, a good choice of homemade burgers, light savoury meals, sandwiches, daily specials and a rather unusual (and delicious) selection of cakes. Options such as chocolate and beetroot, courgette and pear or fig and orange are some of this reviewer’s favourites.
With its wooden floors, pleasant eclectic mix of mismatched, Cath Kidston-style tables and chairs and unusual selection of wall hangings, Tillings has an easy charm. All are welcome, from smartly dressed ladies who lunch, to dogs, children, muddy boots and cyclists. A bit of a home from home, really, but with someone else doing the cooking.
Tillings also has a lovely, discreet, hilltop garden, where you can sit with a glass of wine and watch the world go by beneath you.
Although friends of mine have found service at Tillings a little rude and slow, it wasn’t my experience. Hopefully this was just a blip.
Oh, and don’t miss the charming gift shop: past the figure of the pipe-smoking Chinaman and up the stairs.
What they say about themselves: “Spacious, warm and welcoming, we are as well known for our friendly atmosphere as we are for our delicious homemade food.”
