Town Clock broken 480 4

It’s not midday so is it midnight? No, just a broken clock.

Time appears to be standing still in Guildford High Street at the moment.

The ancient town clock, an iconic emblem of Guildford and part of the Guildhall, has broken down and the hands have been set at 12 o’clock.

According to a councillor, commenting off the record: “A cog has broken and has to be replaced.”

The clock was fitted with an automated winding mechanism last year but, in practice, it still requires regular manual adjustment.

A lady who works in Guildford commented: “It has made me realise how much I depend on the clock. I often glance up at it as I walk up and down the High Street and it has caused a bit of confusion.”

Another senior resident said: “I wonder if the fault is the new mechanism. The old system lasted us for generations.”
