Employees and students from the University of Surrey gathered together yesterday (May 20) for a short service to reflect on the recent devastating events in Nepal and focus on all those who have been affected.
The service was also attended by the Deputy Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Gordon Jackson and his wife, the Deputy Mayoress Sue Jackson.
The University’s Buddhist Chaplain, Professor Geoff Hunt, led the crowd in meditation to reflect on what has happened in Nepal, remembering the victims and those in need.
There followed speeches from two student members of Surrey’s Nepalese community. Pasang Sherpa spoke about the effects these terrible earthquakes have had on the Nepalese people and how the University community can help to support them, and Narbu Gurung addressed the crowd in Nepali.
The event finished with white lotus flowers, a traditional Buddhist symbol, being floated on the water to symbolise the University’s solidarity with Nepal.
A Book of Remembrance will be open next week for staff, students and visitors to write a message, after which it will be sent to the Nepalese Embassy.
