On a hot sunny afternoon on Wednesday September 4, Castle Green Bowling Club (CGBC) were able to avenge a defeat by winning against Burpham Bowling Club in the Mens’ Tuesday Triples League by 44 shots to 26.

CGBC managed to win on both rinks, by 24-12 (skip Rob Williams, with Brian Wrest and Peter Smith) and by 20-14 (skoip Derek Redgwell, with Paul Plummer and Colin Summerhayes). A tea break with biscuits at 10 ends was well appreciated by all.

Sunday September 8 promised to be thundery in spells, and so it was.

A massive thundershower came down just as the CGBC and their opponents from East Horsley left the green, halfway through their game, for the traditional sandwich and a cup of tea.

Happily, the rain cleared in time for the game to be resumed after tea. Scores were about level at half time, and the end result was not much different – a draw 55 to 55. Satisfaction all round.

The individual rinks varied widely in performance. Jill Bird’s team of Dorothy and David Newman scored 24-11;  at the opposite end, Hilary Vogel’s team of Dennis Hirst-Marsden and Mary Reeves, despite having led  by 16-11 at one point, crashed in flames with a score of 16-27.

In the middle there was a pretty even balance, and Jim Horwood’s team of Patrick Andrew and Ann Bailey managed an almost draw of 15-17. Well done all round. Given the state of the weather we were lucky to see the game finished.
