Guildford City (0) 1, Westfield (0) 2

By Barry Underwood

On a heavy pitch at the Spectrum, Westfield gained deserved revenge for an earlier cup defeat at the same venue.

Westfield are the current holders of the Aldershot Senior Cup and they now face a visit to Fleet Town in the third round.

The visitors dominated possession for much of the first period with their underused goalkeeper Michelle Verga the loneliest person in the stadium.

But to their credit Guildford defended well and chances on goal were few and far between. Twice the visitor’s winger Sekou Toure whipped low crosses through the danger area with a touch and Jacob Terry comfortably saved an effort from Lui Edwards.

From a corner, Westfield defender Quincy Rowe fired a loose ball over the bar, but late in the half City’s attack sprung into life. From a fine passing move Manny Acheampong advanced on goal from the left flank but from a good shooting position his under-hit effort was comfortably saved.

Minutes later Acheampong again shot on goal, but his effort was saved low down.

The second period was a more even affair territorially but with rain falling conditions were getting more difficult.

Early on Jacob Terry saved well from a close-range header, and on 57 minutes the visitors took the lead. A deep free kick bobbled around at the back post before being turned in by Lui Edwards. Then, after a good run, Edwards saw a shot deflected for a corner

City had good possession but couldn’t fashion a real threat on the Westfield goal.

On 75 minutes Westfield scored their second goal. Substitute Richard Afrane-Kesey went past a defender in the box before shooting low into the bottom corner.

It was no holds barred now for Guildford. Throwing caution to the wind Luca Le Page saw a 25-yard effort comfortably saved. But with five minutes remaining Guildford did close the deficit.

From a corner Alex Stingelin’s fierce effort was blocked by Verga. The ball was still live in the box and Nik Krokhin volleyed into the net from 12 yards.

Guildford pressed forward in the final stages in search of an equaliser. Le Page saw a shot clear the bar but in the end, it was Westfield who advance to the next round.

Team: Jacob Terry, Alex Rodway-Brown (Malachai Cole 61), Ben Gambrah (Alex Stingelin 38), Ben Drake, Nik Krokhin, Joe Atkin (Micah Fraser 55), Jake Brown (Freddie Robins 61), Luca Le Page, Dominik Vakulya (Jaiden Chang-Brown 55), Manny Acheampong, Sam Sesay.

It is fair to say that a second important goal has alluded Guildford City once again. Nonetheless, City players continued to play attacking football even at the final stages of the match. Well played to Westfied on their victory.

The City can place extra focus on the League match encounters.

Best wishes and hoping for a little more “rub of the green” for GCFC.
