Opinions from those who replied differed as to where the photographer was standing when taking the now vintage picture featured in the previous post.

The view looks towards St Martha’s Church. I was not sure myself, but going on the number of replies, the majority seems to favour a view from around the One Tree Hill area and with Tyting Farm, off Halfpenny Lane, in view.

The quirky pictured did indeed show a view from Sydenham Road, looking through a passageway to Oxford Terrace. Well done and thanks to all who replied.

The vintage picture this time shows some rather austere buildings not far from Guildford town centre. Pictured here during the First World War and published as a picture postcard when the buildings took on a different use.

Only a little of the buildings on this site remain today. Do you know where and what this is?

The quirky picture was supplied by Dave Middleton. We do not often feature interior views, as they can be quite difficult to identify, but this is from a well visited building in Guildford High Street. So, which one, and more interestingly, who is the person depicted in the stained-glass window?

I suspect the old picture was the Union Workhouse and the change of use mentioned was when it became St Luke’s Hospital.

I am guessing that the window is in one of the Guildhall doors.

The subject could be one of Guildford’s literary figures, possibly Lewis Carroll.

The postcard shows the workhouse at a time when it was adapted for use as Guildford Military War Hospital, as the caption says on a similar image at http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Guildford/

I think the stained-glass window depicts Lewis Carroll, and is in Abbot’s Hospital.

The Visitors’ guide describes the Guesten Hall, and states “Lewis Carroll, whose family lived in Guildford, gave a series of mathematical lectures here during 1897.”

I think this looks like part of the old St Luke’s Hospital complex.
