Who Are the Worthy Pewley Knitters?

This novel Nativity scene should give no one the needle.

By Martin Giles

A mystery group of knitters has been entertaining those walking the streets to the south of the town centre in recent days.

Christmas scenes, populated by skilfully knitted figures, have been gradually developing on iron railings that surround the water reservoir on Pewley Hill.

And to complete things, here are the shepherds watching their flock of worryingly large, but suitably woolly, sheep.

But who are the Pewley Knitters? We’d like to hear their story.

A notice gives a major clue to the purpose of the display by we’d like to know more about the knitters and find out who came up with the idea and who is involved.

Cllr Maddy Redpath (R4GV, Holy Trinity), who lives in Charlotteville said: “I have noticed these figures appearing in the run-up to Christmas over the last few years and wondered who was behind it.

“The notice put up recently shows it is a worthy fund-raising effort by St Saviours Church. Good luck to them.

“It’s another example of the community spirit that exists in Guildford.”

Here the traditional Twelve Days of Christmas song has been stitched-up. Presumably, the Lords-a-leaping have yet to be added. They need to take care of those spikes! All together now… “On the first day of Christmas, a lady knitted me…” Or perhaps it was a gentleman? We hope to hear.

Someone has been very busy, that’s for sure.

It would be wonderful if something unique like this had been done down in the town as the businesses there have been suffering so much this year because of covid. They need us as customers to visit and spend money. However of course following the guidance we have been given during this pandemic. We have a historic town we have to use it or we will lose it.

If you’d really like to know more, I could shed light but to be honest we just love that you’ve understood the spirit of the yarn bomb – to make people smile and bring joy to our community! It’s just what we need isn’t it?

Thank you, thank you Guildford Dragon, and all the passers by who appreciate the art.

    All good wishes.

PS The crib scene is desperately looking for a donkey if anyone can help out?

How beautiful. Well done to all involved. A great idea.

All who got knitting have made me and many more smile. Thank you.

    Hope you get many donkeys.
