A woman’s body was recovered by Surrey Police at Millmead Lock in Guildford yesterday morning (Saturday, July 14).

In a press release, a police spokesperson said: “Just before 9am … officers were called to the Millmead lock, on the River Wey at Guildford, where a woman’s body had been spotted floating in the water.

“At this stage, the woman has not been formally identified, though we know who she is and have informed her family. The coroner has also been informed.

“We are treating the death as unexplained, but do not believe at this stage that there was anyone else involved.

“We want to speak to anyone who may have been in or around the Millmead lock between 8.00 am and 9.00 am this morning, and may have seen the woman before she entered the water.

“In particular, witnesses have described another witness, a woman in her 50’s, who was sat on a bench nearby eating a picnic. She left in the direction of Debenhams through the car park before police arrived.

“We are keen to speak to this witness, to see if there is any further information she can add to help establish how the woman came to be in the water.”

The police are asking for anyone with information to contact Surrey Police immediately on 101, quoting 45180075013. Alternatively, information can be given anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
