Guildford Borough Council is inviting local young artists to create their vision for the borough and enter an art competition they are organising.
Artists up to the age of 18 can take part and illustrate how they think Guildford should look in 2050. The competition is part of the council’s effort to involve local people of all ages in planning for the future of our borough.
Cllr Stephen Mansbridge, leader of the council, said: “We aim to reach out to all residents, including young people, through our extensive Draft Local Plan consultation.
“Their views are very important – the decisions we make now will shape the borough they live in with their families. The art competition will give children and young people a chance to show us how they think their future should look.”
There are four competition age categories: 6 years and younger; 7 to 10 years; 11 to 13 years; 14 to 18 years.
The council will award a category winner and a highly commended award for each age group, in addition to an overall competition winner.
The overall winner will receive a £50 voucher for Guildford Spectrum, G Live or the Electric Theatre. Winners in each category will receive a £30 voucher and those who are highly commended a voucher for £15. Winning entries will be displayed in the public areas of the council offices at Millmead.
Entrants can use any media – for example, watercolour, acrylic paints, pencil. All entries should be A3 size or smaller.
The competition is open to residents or students at a school in the borough. All entrants must be 18 years old or younger.
Those wishing to enter the competition should label their pictures ‘My vision for Guildford’ and include their name, age, address, contact telephone number and email. Entrants can hand their pictures in 25 Swan Lane, Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm or at the council’s Millmead offices. Alternatively, they can be posted to: PR and Marketing, Guildford Borough Council, Millmead House, Millmead, Guildford, GU2 4BB.
The council will be unable to return entries. The closing date for entries is Friday, September 12.
