Guildford High Street is set for another change as Zero Carbon Guildford vacates its premises at No. 168, making way for national furniture retailer Bensons for Beds.

A recent planning application submitted to Guildford Borough Council confirms that Bensons for Beds intends to move into the site. The application includes proposals for branded signage that will be in keeping with the town’s conservation area status.

What’s Next for Zero?

Zero Carbon Guildford, an environmental and community space fixture in Guildford’s sustainability scene, has been based at 168 High Street since its move from Friary Street.

Zero has served as a hub for eco-conscious initiatives, educational talks, and sustainability projects, making it a key part of the local community.

The Zero team will move to Unit 1 of the  Riverside Business Park in Walnut Tree Close but the new centre will not operate in exactly the same way as it has in the High Street. While it is intended to keep the Community Fridge going, and events, the centre will not be open to the public every day.

More information will be made available on its website. The team’s longer term hope is that it can return to a more central location in the town if an opportunity arises.

Bensons for Beds Coming to Guildford

Documents submitted by Bensons for Beds confirm that the company plans to take over the unit, installing heritage-style signage in line with Guildford’s conservation guidelines.

The well-known furniture and mattress retailer operates 166 stores nationwide and will be a new addition to Guildford’s retail mix. The move suggests continued demand for national chains in the town centre, despite ongoing debates about the balance between independent and chain retailers.

Changing the Face of the High Street

The arrival of Bensons for Beds marks yet another shift in Guildford’s evolving retail landscape. While some will welcome the investment, others may lament the loss of Zero, which provided a unique, non-commercial space in the town.

With retail pressures, rising rents and shifting consumer habits, the changes at 168 High Street reflect the ongoing challenges and transformations shaping Guildford town centre.

Zero’s departure will leave a gap for those who value their community-driven approach. Meanwhile, Bensons for Beds’ arrival highlights the continued demand for high-street retail, even as shopping habits evolve.
