It’s a special occasion when you celebrate your 100th birthday and Rita Goddard certainly enjoyed a very special party to mark the milestone moment.

Rita’s family and friends gathered on Saturday, February 6, at West Horsley Village Hall to join her in the celebrations.

Born in Essex in the middle of the First World War, Rita moved to Surrey in the early 1940s, finally settling in Horsley in 1945.

Since then her immediate family has grown from three children to six grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, the youngest just a few months old.

Her family was joined at the party by friends from the local community, where she has played such an active part for the last 71 years, and many others from further afield.

The party was excellently entertained by the Surrey Ukeaholics Band and then enjoyed a sumptuous home-made tea and celebration cake.

Asked afterwards what it felt like to be 100 years old, Rita said: “I don’t feel any different, except during the party when I felt like a queen.”
