Supporting Better Transport for Everyone in Surrey
From 16 to 22 June, we’re proud to support Better Transport Week, a national campaign led by Campaign for Better Transport.
This week shines a light on the power of transport to connect communities, support economic growth, improve health and wellbeing, and tackle climate change. Whether you walk, cycle, car-share or take public transport, this is a great opportunity to get involved and celebrate the benefits of accessible, sustainable transport.
At Surrey County Council, we believe better transport is transport that works for everyone – and that includes people who are blind or partially sighted.
That’s why we’re excited to be trialling the Aira Explorer App to make it easier for visually impaired people to navigate bus stations and interchanges. The Aira app connects users with trained visual interpreters through their smartphones, offering real-time support to find their way around transport hubs confidently and independently.
The trial is currently running at:
All app usage at these locations will be free of charge, covered by the Council using a Government Bus Grant. Anyone with a smartphone and data plan can join the trial at their convenience.
An in-person trial session will be held at Redhill Bus Station on Tuesday 17 June at 10am, where residents can try the app and provide feedback.
Together, through initiatives like Better Transport Week and the Aira trial, we’re working to make transport in Surrey more inclusive, connected, and sustainable for all.
