A group of intrepid young people took part in what is called the grisly Grim Challenge to raise money for the Guildford-based Matrix Trust, a youth work charity.

It took place in Aldershot on Saturday, February 6, in appropriate wild and wet conditions.

Nine people took part for the Matrix Trust so far raising more than £1,500, that will used to help at-risk young people in Guildford.

‘The Grim’ is a run of over eight miles through cold mud, complete with scrambling nets and lakes to run through.

Despite battling through the beginnings of Storm Imogen, each runner managed to complete the course in well under two hours.

Nici Cahusac, a first time Grim Challenge runner, was the first female to complete the race with a time of 56.57 minutes, putting her in 23rd place overall.

The other Matrix runners, half of whom would normally avoid running at all costs, ran in girls and guys teams, captained by newlyweds Ben and Katie Lowe for a healthy dose of rivalry!

Afterwards Katie said: “We are so proud of each member of this year’s Grim Challenge team, they each gave their all today to raise money for a very worthy cause.

“The Matrix Trust, who work tirelessly to support young people across Guildford – every penny we have raised will help make a young person’s life better – all the cold and pain has been worth it!”

The Matrix Trust is a youth work charity working to support various pastoral and educational needs of local young people.

All the money raised by the runners will benefit its projects, such as youth clubs, schools workers and one-to-one mentoring.
