A Message Of Hope: If You Hit A Low Point in January, Help Is At Hand

People struggling with the January blues – depression, anxiety or loneliness – can get help from the NHS.

Short days, cold weather and the post-Christmas anti-climax can all have an effect on people’s mental wellbeing.

NHS Surrey Heartlands’ Chief Medical Officer is reminding people that support is available for anyone struggling with their mental health this winter.

Dr Charlotte Canniff, Joint Chief Medical Officer for NHS Surrey Heartlands, said: “Winter can be a particularly tough time for mental wellbeing. Asking for support is a sign of strength, not weakness. Across Surrey, there are caring professionals and community services ready to listen and support you, whatever you’re going through.”

If you or someone you know is in immediate mental distress, confidential help is available day and night:

If you’re feeling anxious, low or stressed but not in crisis, local NHS and community services can help before things escalate.

The NHS says: “You can self-refer to NHS Talking Therapies Surrey, a free service offering evidence based support for anxiety, depression and related conditions — with no GP referral required.

“Your GP can also connect you to a wide range of wellbeing and community programmes, including mindfulness sessions, group activities and one-to-one support, available through Healthy Surrey and Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.”
