The Town Guides programme of guided walks for the summer ends this week. Hence, I will now be taking a break from writing Guildford Snippets until next year.
Our walks for booked groups continue throughout the year, so you may still sometimes see a guided walk in the town centre.
This year, in addition, we are planning a few special walks during the winter months linked to particular events.
The Military History walk is scheduled on Saturday, November 9 at 11am for Remembrance weekend.
We are also working on plans for a Festive Walk in December and a Guildford Markets walk in the new year. These will be free walks, as usual, but we are asking everyone to book beforehand. To make bookings or for more information on the winter programme contact Guildford Tourist Information Centre or go to www.guildfordwalks.org.uk.
I would like to particularly thank those of you who posted comments and responses. I am sure that many more of you also knew some of the answers but kept the information to yourselves.
The answer to Snippet No 31 was that George Abbot became Lord Treasurer from 1618 – 1621, something he described as the “worst thing I was at”.
Having read that James I was extravagant and always living beyond his means, I can understand why George found this such a difficult job!
If you would like to hear more stories about this fascinating man, the George Abbot’s Gift to Guildford exhibition started this weekend at Guildford House Gallery and will continue until November 2, 2019.
