Christmas lights were switched on at Perry Hill Green, Worplesdon, on Friday, December 12, by Dr Paul Cragg, the chairman of the parish council.
The lights have been provided by John Gunner, who with his son Stephen, and Dan Meeks, spent five days installing the lights in the five horse chestnut trees fronting the green.
As Mr Gunner had donated the lights to Worplesdon Parish Council, it agreed to make a donation, together with a donation received from Worplesdon View Care Home, to Mr Gunner’s chosen charity, Cancer Research UK.
A cheque for £550 was presented to Malcolm McNeil Charwynne, a representative of Cancer Research UK, by the clerk to the parish council, Gaynor White, following the switching on of the lights.
The following evening (Saturday, December 13), the Wood Street Village Association held its annual carols on the green event.
The association provided mulled wine, soft drinks and 120 mince pies, which had been donated by Worplesdon View Care Home.
Around 150 people attended, along with the choir from Worplesdon St Mary’s Church, led by John McLean. The rector, the Revd Hugh Grear, joined the choir for the singing of the carols.
The Christmas tree on the green was donated by Robert Grimmond, a local resident, and the lights on the tree and maypole were donated and installed by local resident John Gunner.
On behalf of the village association, Bob McShee thanked the choir for leading the singing and everyone for attending the event.
Donations received for the mulled wine and mince pies totalling £205.70 has been presented to The Children’s Society.
