Anxiously clutching his valuable seed haul to his chest, this gardener peruses the seedlings on offer.
Guildford Seedbank’s fifth Seed Swap, held on the first day of meteorological spring, was the most successful to date, organisers have told The Dragon NEWS.
Attendance increased by 33 per cent over last year following advertising in the Dragon and elsewhere.
Over 200 gardeners, mainly from the Guildford area but some from as far as south London, attended the event in the Trinity Centre, by Holy Trinity church on the High Street.
Between them they brought 780 packets, tubers, onion sets and flower bulbs to swap for something new.
Many of the thousands of seed packets on offer were grown locally by members of the Seedbank. One of their aims is to offer seeds adapted to local conditions so that growers can achieve success in their home-growing and come back with their own saved seeds to offer at the next Seed Swap event.
And the swapping does not stop there. In the next few months the surplus seed will be available in local libraries, including a seed cabinet on the first floor of Guildford Library, and at local events.
Event organiser Jane Thorp said: “Look out for the Seedbank’s Autumn Event, date to be confirmed, all about how to save your seeds!
