Bill’s, The Angel Hotel, Guildford, High Street

Anyone who cares about Guildford and it’s history might have been watching developments at The Angel Hotel with some concern. Significant investment in refurbishment would, one would imagine, need some financial return if the hotel was to stay in business.

So it is perhaps with relief that the introduction of ‘Bill’s’ a restaurant chain of 14 shops, nearly all in the south-east, seems to be attracting healthy numbers of customers.

They have taken over most of the public ground floor space of the hotel which now seems to be constantly lively and busy. They also have the historic 14th century under-croft kitted out for when the ground floor becomes full or for private functions.

It will not be everyone’s cup of coffee. Traditionalists might lament the loss of the older fashioned style, the adoption of a corporate style and the more cramped layout but if that is the price of success it is surely worthwhile.

We have reviewed it as a place for a coffee but, in common with many other similar establishments an extensive menu is on offer throughout the day and into the evening.

Subject Comments Score
The Garden Room
Coffee One Americano one cappuccino. Definitely above average. Good strong coffee with a continental flavour. 4
Cakes Two tea cakes good if unremarkable but the ‘own brand jam’ was top notch – very fruity. 4
Menu range
Extensive lunch, snacks, tea and evening meal with vegetarian choices. Bill’s is more than a coffee shop. 5
Interior Interior: the classic style interior has all gone to make way for what is presumably the Bill’s style. Traditionalists might not like it but it does suit the product. 3
Atmosphere Good, lively, busy. Despite discrete publicity Bill’s is already clearly popular. 4
Access Steps to encounter from the High Street or Angel Gate make this venue less convenient for wheel chair users or those with push chairs. 2
Service Very welcoming, pleasant and helpful table service. 5
Information Wifi, website and newspapers. Menus at table. 5
Value for money Good value for money 4
Opening hours Monday – Saturday: 8am – 11pm

What they say about themselves

“From award-winning breakfasts through to delicious and unusual lunch dishes and the twinkling of candles by night, Bill’s is the place to be.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you can expect a typical Bill’s warm welcome, great service and very good, freshly prepared dishes throughout the day.

In the evening, Bills comes into its own. Our dinner menu is a mix of our own dishes and a selection of our take on some of the best classics around.

Whether you’re meeting up with colleagues, celebrating a special event or simply after a lovely dinner for two, Bill’s is the place to be.”

Stayed over-night after performing at the Electric Theatre. Very relaxing stay in a lovely hotel. The room was beautiful and clean.

It was lovely just to step out into such an amazing and historic High Street. Will come again.
