Flames fought for a third period comeback but ultimately lost 6–4 against Coventry Blaze at home in the Skydome Arena.
The Coventry hosts made a flying start, scoring twice inside the opening five minutes to establish an early advantage thanks to Jaxson Esman on the powerplay, and Griffin Ness.
Blaze extended their lead near the midway mark through Márkó Csollák during a stretch of 4 on 4 play, and added another from William Boysen to take a commanding 4-0 spread into the final frame.
Flames finally found their breakthrough just 1:33 into the third period when Jordan Power had their opener. Seconds later, however, Jack Hopkins had Coventry’s four-goal lead on the board and a quick follow up from Ness made it 6-1.
Chase Gresock at 46:10 and Cole Sanford less than two minutes later pulled cut the deficit. A five on three powerplay strike by Nate Kallen made it a two goal affair, but that would remain as the clock ran out to close the evening.
“I thought it was good character to not just roll over and push back in the third,” explained Head Coach Paul Dixon.
“We gave up far too much by that point to fully recover, but we didn’t quit and, at that point, that is the best you can ask in terms of looking for sustainable team qualities we want to lean on when we start cup games next weekend.”
