Local historian David Rose is giving an illustrated talk on Saturday, October 11, at St Francis Church, Beckingham Road, Westborough GU2 8BU, telling the story of three churches and their historic links with one another.

These are Emmanuel in Stoughton, St Francis in Westborough and St Clare’s in Park Barn.

The talk will also include details of the Revd Francis Paynter and his wife Julia. He was once reported to be the only millionaire clergyman in England!

He was the rector of St John’s Church in Stoke Road and his wife and family lived at Stoke Hill Mansion, that was at the top of today’s Bellfields estate.

From the middle of the 19th century into the 20th century they gave generously for the building of a number of churches in Guildford including Christ Church, St Saviour’s and also Emmanuel and St Francis.

To attend, please click here to book your place.

Tea and refreshments will be served after the talk and a £3 donation on arrival is suggested.
