Merrow Village Bowls Club, report by David Raison

On Sunday, June 3, Merrow visited Godalming for our maiden friendly.

Godalming verses Merrow Village Bowls Club.

We were treated to a beautiful, and very hot, afternoon of bowls, accompanied by a band playing in the adjacent park.

There were hordes of people out enjoying the sunshine and music, and some even watched us bowling. Overall, a very bucolic scene.

Godalming had surplus bowlers who wanted to play, so we ended up playing two triples and two rinks, with Godalming loaning two players to make up the fours.

As ever, although this was a friendly, no quarter was given, but the match was played with good humour on both sides. The green was playing well, fairly smooth and fast with bowls turning as expected.

We had a welcome break for tea after 10 ends, when Merrow were presented with a scroll marking Godalming’s 150th anniversary in 2017.

The final result saw a victory of 70-57 for Merrow, but each side won on two rinks, which seemed a fair result.

Congratulations to Merrow’s top team of Ken, Lorna, and David E for an outstanding performance, winning 25-8. We look forward to this match becoming a regular fixture.

Burpham Bowling club, report by Ian Mackrell

While the weather has been everything except consistent, Burpham’s bowling continues to set new highs. Weekend after weekend the club is recording wins.
Spring bank holiday Monday saw Burpham visit West End, and yet again run out winners by the massive margin of 106-74 shots.

The week’s competitive highlight was travelling to top club Egham, for the West Surrey League and Sapphire League matches, which Burpham won – both of them!

An outstanding 67-43 shot victory, and 5-0 points, for the men in the WSL.

The Sapphire team also won handsomely by 64-44 shots, again with a 5-0 points victory.

It’s unlikely Egham have suffered such a home whitewash in many a year – so does this possibly make Burpham now the Surrey club to beat?

On the back of this success, club president Barry Macbeth organised what has to be the most successful internal competition event, the Chipchase Cup, the following day (Sunday, June 3).

Some 48 members participated in this all day event, in glorious sunshine. And more than 25 members watching were treated to outstanding bowling, and joined the competitors at lunch and supper. A truly wonderful day as can be seen from the photos.

The Chipchase Cup winners were Val Wells and Peter Challens – but everyone present on the day demonstrated the strength and importance this club is within the Burpham community.

Castle Green Bowling Club, report by Shirley West

On Saturday, June 3, the Mayor of Guildford, Mike Parsons, opened the beautiful carpet beds in the Castle Grounds for Guildford in Bloom.

Crowds enjoy the entertainment in the Castle Grounds.

With plenty of entertainment from the bandstand, it was a really great day and the weather was brilliant.

The Mayor of Guildford, Mike Parsons, has tea with members of the Castle Green Bowling Club.

Members of Castle Green Bowling Club served teas and home-made cakes during the day and were honoured that the the mayor and Anne Milton MP came in for tea.
