A lively Guildford High Street on Sunday as shoppers peruse the visiting Antiques and Brocante market.

By Martin Giles

Sunday is now one of the busiest shopping days of the week and yesterday (December 16) especially as crowds flocked to the visiting Antiques and Brocante market on High Street.

The market made its Guildford debut in September and proved such a huge success those involved were keen to return.

Organiser Jackie Edwards trying to keep everyone happy.

Organiser Jackie Edwards said: “We had the best responses of any market we do and they wanted it back. So we were given the go-ahead for us to return today (December 15).

“I am also grateful for the help and support of Experience Guildford. We have tried to set it up in a way that does not interfere with the trade of the High Street shops.

All the essentials at this stall, old tools, a watering can, a birdcage, a meat cleaver and, er, a brass fireman’s helmet – well it could be essential when someone is brandishing a meat cleaver.

“So the shops are happy, the council is happy, the stallholders are happy and hopefully the customers are happy again too. Several were here at 9.30am waiting for the stalls to open and some told me it is nice to see different stuff for sale.

“We tend to go to historic towns such as Chichester, Arlesford and Romsey as well as Guildford. They seem to complement our range of goods. We’ll be returning in April at a date to be announced.”

It was an exceptional market, some really unusual and unmentionable items too, all helped by the fabulous weather.
Lovely to bump into friends and neighbours you don’t see so often any more, all felt really positive.

Well done GBC and all the brave organisers. Can we have more markets and town centre events? Perhaps a French Market and a really good Christmas Market.
