Charlotteville Remembers Its War Dead At Service Around War Memorial

The first of this year’s services of remembrance across Guildford was held on Satuday afternoon (November 7) at Charlotteville.

It took place at the war memorial in Addison Road, led by the Revd Rod Pierce of Holy Trinity Church. The trumpeter was Seb Skelly, a music student at the University of Surrey.

Attended by about 30 people of all ages, the act of remembrance featured local resident Julie Howarth who read details of three men commomorated on the memorial and who lost their lives 100 years ago in 1915.

They were Albert William Lansley, who was aged 23 when he was killed in action in Gallipoli on August 6, 1915; Frederick James Brown, who died aged 25, in France. He was the first of three brothers to be kiled during the Great War; and Albert Henry Sepple, who was aged 29 and recently married when he died of wounds on October 21, 1915.

P1040128Wreaths were laid at the memorial that contains names of 25 men from Charlotteville who died in the First Worod War (70 men from Addison, Cooper and Cline Roads served with the armed forces), and seven men from the area who died during the Second World War.

After the service refershments were served in Addison Court where there was a display about the Charlotteville war memorial and the men named on it, courtesy of Ian Nicholls.
