Aldershot Senior Cup

By Barry Underwood

After waiting for six months to play this Aldershot FA Senior Cup 2nd round fixture, Guildford City finally got to lock horns with their Step 4 (ie one league level above) opponents Badshot Lea.

Given that Badshot had Isthmian League fixtures the following day, and also in three- and five-days’ time, the home side rather surprisingly opted to field a strong starting line-up.

The City side worked hard throughout and defended well against their higher-level opponents. Badshot Lea enjoyed the majority of the possession, and their Anuar Ceesay looked especially dangerous.

City fielded two debutants. Frankie Jamieson chased lost causes for much of the evening before departing early due to a red card. Darnell Ramsey meanwhile looked to be able to open up a defence before tiring in the second period.

Early on, City did enjoy some possession. A free-kick into the box just evaded the leaping James Glover, and Ramsey’s free-kick went straight through the danger area without a touch.

But it was Badshot who went ahead on 19 minutes. Mac Chisholm had saved well at the expense of a corner, from which George Hedley was left free in the box to head home.

Just prior to the interval Tolu Ajayi-Obe was harshly judged to have conceded a foul on the edge of the box, but Mac Chisholm saved well from the free-kick.

Chisholm also saved well early in the second half, before hopes of a Guildford recovery were badly hit with the sending-off of Frankie Jamieson. Following a competitive tussle young Jamie Hilton was struck off the ball and laid low. Referee and both assistants missed the incident, and the angry Jamieson was over vigorous with his protestations leading to his red card.

Going down to 10 players effectively killed the game, especially when Baback Dehghani powered home a piledriver on 58 minutes. The rest of the game was an anti-climax. Badshot dominated but were happy to fire in long-range efforts. Guildford for their part looked to contain.

Team: Mac Chisholm, Rayyan Adam, Callum Sullivan, Tolu Ajayi-Obe, James Glover (George Fox  Frankie Jamieson, Darnell Ramsey (Luca Le Page 78), Jack Phillips. Unused sub: Chris Adams.

Referee: Scott Crowhurst

It’s admirable to see Guildford City take on teams that are a league above them despite the disappointing result.
