City Secure Three Points, Eventually, Against Lowly Shoreham

Guildford got back to winning ways at the Spectrum deservedly claiming the three points against Shoreham.

The skipper Luke Mitchell – back from injury – had an extraordinary game scoring from the penalty spot but striking the woodwork on a further four occasions!

The first half was largely an even affair with a busy midfield area making headway difficult for both sides.

It took 10 minutes for either side to get a sight of goal and it was a Shoreham effort when it came; a neat backheel setting up Raman Santos who shot over the bar.

City responded in kind when Harry Nicholas’s ball down the line found Luke Mitchell who turned well and arrowed a powerful effort towards the top corner, but Shoreham’s Jack Wyatt saved spectacularly.

On 24 minutes Mitchell again came close when his volley from a corner was parried and the ball cleared after a scramble in the six-yard box.

The home side took the lead on 37 minutes. Tyreke Martin’s shot was well saved low down, and Dan Rolland was fouled as he went for the loose ball. Up stepped Luke Mitchell who scored from the spot.

Both sides then came close before the interval. Tyreke Martin drove a low cross into the box just evading Josh Williams. Then, against the run of play, Shoreham struck the crossbar from a floated effort from the edge of the box.

After the break City looked the stronger side. Early pressure saw Jake Raffaelli’s header cleared and Luke Mitchell’s half volley just missed the target.

On 63 minutes Guildford got the ball in the net but it was ruled out for offside. A minute later Luke Mitchell smashed an effort goalward that was brilliantly saved onto the bar by Wyatt.

In a rare attack for the visitors Raman Santos saw a long-range effort go just wide.

The same player later forced Jacob Slyfield into a flying save. At the other end of the pitch though it was still Guildford threatening.

Josh Williams shot just wide, and from an excellent Dan Way cross Mitchell netted but again offside was the decision.

Shots were going in from all angles and Luke Mitchell saw a 25 yarder just clear the bar.

On 81 minutes Mitchell hit both posts with the same shot! His powerful effort cannoned off the far post and then onto the near post before being cleared.

There were nerves going into stoppage time with memories fresh of Loxwood’s late equaliser. Tension heightened with strong appeals for a penalty from the Shoreham players but on this occasion lady luck was on Guildford’s side.

Then with the last action of the game Luke Mitchell’s header, yes you’ve guessed it, hit the post – but this time Wayne Grigg was on hand to tuck the ball home.
