The Guildford Dragon NEWS is giving readers a chance to win two pairs of tickets to see La Traviata on Monday, September 21, at the Dorking Halls. Competition details are given below.
Verdi’s masterpiece will be performed by the Russian State Opera accompanied by a large live orchestra and will be sung in Italian with English subtitles.
La Traviata contains some of Verdi’s most beautiful and memorable music. It is a love story shrouded in sacrifice and misunderstanding. Giuseppe Verdi brings the beguiling splendour and gaiety of mid-19th century Parisian life to the stage. But there is also heartbreak and pathos in this tragic and resonant morality tale.
The score encompasses an astonishing range of moods and emotions, from Alfredo’s aristocratic charms to Violetta’s vivid effervescence, perfectly captured in her toast to life and free will “Libiamo ne’ licit calici” (let’s drink from the joyful cups) and “Sempre libera” (always free) – a vocal showpiece to rival any other.
To win the tickets, answer this simple question:
Where is Guildford’s famous 17th-century clock? Is it in High Street or North Street?
Send your answers to eventsdragon@gmail.com. The winners will be informed and receive two tickets each. Deadline for entries is Monday, September 14.
