Council In Mess Over Dog Poo Bins

Guildford Borough Council tweet phasing out dog poo bins got a heated response.

Guildford Borough Council has raised a stink announcing on a tweet that it was withdrawing all dog poo bins over the winter.

“This is a terrible decision,” cried Paul Spooner (Con, Ash South & Tongham) on social media. “Where was the consultation? We need to retain our dog waste bins in the borough!!!” .

Other comments included: “This is going to leave a disgusting mess in the normal bins,” and “If it’s bagged, what’s the issue?”

There were accusations that this had been a unilateral decision by the Lib Dems and cries of “what an unbelievably dumb decision”.

In partial retreat, the council sent out a clarification on Facebook from the leader of the council, Caroline Reeves (Lib Dem, Friary & St Nicolas), saying: “Please rest assured we haven’t gone barking mad in removing some dog bins in our parks in the borough. We just didn’t word our social media posts as clearly as we could have done.

“We have enough capacity in the existing litter bins in parks, which can be used to take both litter and dog waste.

“Changes will take place on a rolling basis as bins reach the end of their life and need replacing. Dog waste bins provided in our countryside sites and on our streets however will not be affected.

“While we are phasing out the bins we have also added some reminders to dog owners to pick up their dog waste and that it can be placed in ordinary litter bins. Once again thank you for your care and concern for our open spaces.”

We’ve been asking for litter bins at the Rverside Nature reserve for 15 years now as Guildford parks department steadfastly refuse to supply one. The rubbish /refuse guys (many thanks guys) give a couple of bags a week for us to use.

Considering we have a bag a week perhaps they could take this as a ‘sign bin’ made.
